Two houses were fully damaged and five others developed cracks in their walls as soil loosened due to construction of an apartment complex by Prestige Group. The incident occurred on Promenade Road near Coles Park in central Bengaluru around 4.30 am on Thursday.

Residents went through a nightmare as they saw their homes come apart. Seven residential buildings, located close to the apartment complex coming up opposite Santosh Hospital, bore the brunt. Two of them were fully damaged.

"Forty per cent of my building has been damaged with walls of kitchen and living room coming apart. The right portion of my house has also caved in," said Asghar Pasha, a resident.

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said that buildings in the lane started weakening after construction began on the apartment complex. "Today's blow was the hardest as visible cracks appeared in our buildings," he said.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) asked the affected families to evacuate. Pulakeshinagar MLA, R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy, who visited the spot, told DH that families were advised to evacuate as the houses might get further damage during the rains. "Construction workers have dug up a portion of the road for erecting the pillars. This loosened the soil which in turn affected the buildings located close-by. Luckily, no resident was injured," he added.

BBMP officials said they had ordered the Prestige Group to stop the work immediately. Pulakeshinagar corporator, Abdul Rakeeb Zakir, said the real estate company had secured approval for the 21-storey apartment complex in 2014, and started construction last year.
Prestige Group owned responsibility for the incident and promised to provide alternative accommodation to residents as well as repair the damage to their houses. "There were some structures/houses that were abutting the compound wall, and these have developed cracks, which have made them unsafe for the time being. This is owing to the excessive rains and the clay-like soil. We have promised the residents alternative accommodation till the retaining walls are built and will undertake to rehabilitate and rebuild whatever damages have taken place owing to this construction activity."
