Events for Kalakshetra golden jubilee

'Nenapinokali' — a year-long cultural extravaganza to mark the 50th anniversary of Ravindra Kalakshetra, would begin from September 7.

Cultural committee chairam Srinivas G Kappanna said cultural programmes would be conducted for five days every second Wednesday to Sunday of the month at the Kalakshetra, Samsa Ranga Mandira and at Nayana Auditorium.

In the first such programme, a total of 300 folk and Yakshagana artistes from 30 districts will take part. "Every month, there will be a different theme based on which activities will be held," Kappanna said.

Committee member Jogila Siddaraja said inter-collegiate competitions are being conducted to encourage the youth. "During this month's celebrations, there will be Yakshagana contest and each college team will be given 15 minutes time to display their skills," he added. The winners of the inter-collegiate competitions will be awarded Rs 3,000 (first prize), Rs 2,000 (second prize) and Rs 1,000 (third prize).

The committee members said the government order on sending artistes from the state to the Association of Kannada Kootas of America (AKKA) Sammelana in the USA came at the last minute. Hence, 90 Dalit artistes lost the opportunity to participate in the Sammelana that starts from Friday at New Jersey in United Sates of America.They added that few artistes had gotten tourist visas instead of P-3 visas that allows entry of artists or entertainers.
