The city administration has taken a slew of measures to make the Ganesha festival safe and eco-friendly.

In this regard, the BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad had a meeting with police commissioner N S Megharik and officials of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).

It was decided that there will be no power supply to Ganesha pandals between 10 pm and 6 am this time around. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) has taken this decision to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the city during the festival.

"Bescom has 48 sub-divisions in the city. Each division receives about 200 applications seeking temporary registrations for power supply at the Ganesha pandals.Continuous power consumption at the pandals results in overload, affecting the supply to the city.

Hence, Bescom has decided not to supply power to pandals between 10 pm and 6 am," Bescom director Nagesh said, while speaking at the peace committee meeting organised by the City police. Megharik said that the police would take stern action against those extorting money for Ganesha festival on September 5. The police would also intensify patrolling to curb drag-racing and wheeling during Bakrid on September 12.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said that BBMP had made vehicle arrangements to collect Ganesha idols from every locality for immersion. "The BBMP will inform the public about the vehicles and ponds created for the immersion on Friday," he said.

Palike has decided not to allow polythene bags, banners and buntings to be immersed along with Ganesha idols. The idols carrying toxic paints and materials will not be allowed for immersion. The civic agency has identified 35 lakes for immersion, including Halasuru, Sankey and Yediyur. Idols should be immersed at the designated tanks created within the lakes.

Leaders of various communities and senior officers of BBMP, Bescom, Fire and Emergency Services and KSPCB attended the meeting as obtaining No Objection Certificate from these agencies is mandatory for Ganesha pandals.
