Besides the chilly weather, motorists near Whitefield junction had to brave the foam that spilt onto the road from Varthur lake on Friday morning.
With Bengaluru receiving continuous rainfall over the last few days, there was an increase in the inflow of polluted water in the lake's waste weir. This led to foaming as the lake water gets completely mixed with sewage and industrial effluents, according to local residents.
Volunteers of the citizen activist group, Whitefield Rising, said they noticed the foam on Thursday and Friday. "It's the first time that we are seeing foam rising up to 7 feet. The situation is as bad as it was in April 2015. Pedestrians and motorcyclists were struggling to pass the busy traffic junction," one of the volunteers said.
Foam builds up in Varthur lake whenever it rains. The situation in Bellandur and Yemalur waste weirs is not as bad. The civic agencies have done little to clean the sewage-filled lakes.
