To initiate youngsters into the field of aviation, the city chapter of the Aeronautical Society of India has organised 'Aerolympics', a national-level competition for students of Classes 10, 11 and 12.
The first round of the competition had over 150 students participating from across the country. They were required to write a project report on 'Naval Aviation' in teams of three. The top 24 reports from nine states were chosen for the final round. The three-day event is set to begin on Friday at the Hindustan Management Academy auditorium. Two teams from Karnataka, one from Christ Junior College and one from Belagavi, are participating.
"The idea is to create awareness among youngsters about career opportunities in the field of aeronautical engineering. Many students who took part in the previous years have later pursued higher studies in this subject," said P Mueen Ahamadulla Khan, secretary of the society's Bengaluru chapter.
In the second round, participants will have technical quizzes and a cultural competition. They will have technical lectures by industry scientists from Indian Space Research Organisation and National Aerospace Laboratories.
