The curious musings of a cartoonist and his experiments with pen can be seen at the exhibition 'World of Raobail' at the Indian Cartoon Gallery on MG Road.

A variety of cartoons, envelope covers, book illustrations made by the veteran Prabhakar Raobail, from Karnataka, are on display at the gallery till December 31.

Most of Raobail's drawings feature bejewelled women, wearing Western outfits and talking about their dogs. "In the 60s and 70s, my brother and I used to perform mimicry shows in luxury hotels, at fashion events and dog shows. I would observe people attending such events and try to draw caricatures of them," Raobail said.

Colourful collage fish, scenes from elite clubs and scribbles adorn the envelopes Raobail used for sending letters. "I used to write letters to my friends when I was young. I liked decorating plain envelopes with collages and drawings. Now, most of my friends are abroad or no longer alive but I continue to make these covers," he said.

Raobail's 8" X 11" 'Madding Crowd' cartoon which shows over 1,000 miniature people listening to a speech was bought by Mario Miranda. Each figure is depicted performing different actions and with different facial expressions. A copy of this cartoon and a 22"X53" 'Madding Crowd' cartoon are on display.

During his time in Mumbai, his cartoons were published in several dailies and magazines. The political cartoons he made in 1980s, address issues such as dowry deaths, potholes in Mumbai roads and corrupt politicians among others.

Acrylic paintings and collages as recent as 2016 are also on display. Though Raobail is almost 80 years old, he continues to draw and paint in his Bengaluru residence.

"He is a versatile artist with an active imagination. He draws with precision and gets the cartoon right in the first try," said V G Narendra, managing trustee of the Indian Institute of Cartoonists. The institute had awarded Raobail the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
