Police have arrested a married couple, their son, a garment factory HR manager and another person for duping a man of Rs 10 lakh in Rs 2,000 notes after promising him 20% commission for replacing the scrapped bills.
Sudarshan, an HR manager at a garment factory, learnt that Shivakumar, who works at the same factory, had a stack of new notes, which he was willing to part with for commission. Sudarshan contacted him and said he had Rs 12 lakh in old notes.
Shivakumar agreed to exchange the scrapped notes. Accordingly, they planned to meet up in Richmond Town where Shivakumar would bring the new notes.
Sudarshan, meanwhile, planned to rob Shivakumar. On December 5, Shivakumar arrived in Richmond Town as per the plan, carrying Rs 10.60 lakh in Rs 2,000 notes. There, he met Sudarshan's friend, Saleem, 32, a resident of RT Nagar.
Instead of giving him the scrapped notes, Saleem and his friends — Mohammed Baig, 48, and his son Shumaail, 23 — snatched Shivakumar's cash bag and fled the spot. They kept the cash with Baig's wife Tayyab Jahan Ara, 48, who is a private schoolteacher in RT Nagar.
Shivakumar went to the Ashoknagar police station and filed a complaint. Police checked Saleem's call detail record and apprehended him. Saleem gave away the names of other suspects who were also arrested.
A senior police officer said the entire crime was plotted by Sudarshan. Police haven't given a clean chit to Shivakumar either and are questioning him about the source of the Rs 2,000 notes. "He claims to have collected it from his friends and relatives. But we will keep questioning him," the officer added.
