Bengalureans are in for a visual treat as they will get to watch a solo performance of Astad Deboo, a pioneer in contemporary Indian dance, at The Collection, UB City, at 7 pm on December 16 (Friday).

The 60-minute show has been titled 'Eternal Embrace'. It is the first time that he will be performing a solo show in the city in the last one decade.

Interacting with reporters on Tuesday, the internationally acclaimed artiste said, "The music is composed by Japanese musician Yukio Tsuji. I am very excited about my performance here. The piece was recently performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York."

The Sufi-inspired solo, his signature style of evoking intense emotion, has already been staged in Mumbai, Delhi and would also be presented in Chennai and Ahmedabad. The play explores the tension between the ephemeral and material worlds. The piece received a standing ovation, with Deboo being touted as a 'dancing monk'. Deboo said his next project is a collaboration with Korean and Mridangam drummers. He has already started working on his next performance.

Deboo, an exponent of Kathak and Kathakali dance forms, has performed in 70 countries. He was felicitated with Padma Shri award in 2007. He considers his style meditative and organic. He had earlier choreographed for movies such as 'Omkara' and 'Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities'. For all the aspiring choreographers and contemporary style dancers, he had words of advice:"A trained body and techniques are essential. Also, there has to be vocabulary in the dance flow."Bengalureans are in for a visual treat as they will get to watch a solo performance of Astad Deboo, a pioneer in contemporary Indian dance, at 'The Collection', UB City, at 7 pm on December 16 (Friday).
