Most tourists visiting historical places hire guides to understand the rich stories associated with heritage buildings.

But getting the right guide at the right price is always a daunting task. Coming to the aid of tourists, the Karnataka Archaeology Department is developing an Android and I-Way-based application which will be an audio guide to visitors.

Pinakin, the app, has been developed by Srikanth Iyer, in association with the Archaeology Department. To begin with, the app will provide information on artefacts, sculptures, figurines and stone carvings at the Archaeology Department's museum next to Venkatappa Art Gallery on Kasturba Road.

Iyer told DH the app can be downloaded instantly and connects with the department's server to provide audio-based information about artefacts in the museum.

"At present, information about 25 exhibits is being provided within 30 minutes in Kannada and English and narration in Hindi will be added soon," said Iyer.

Since most archaeologically significant places revolve around Hindu mythology, the app will summarily narrate the importance of gods and goddesses whose figurines have been displayed. This will help those who are not acquainted with mythological stories.

The app also provides information about parking facilities, toilets, dress code (if any), cloakroom, checklist and eateries in the vicinity. He added that the app is much cheaper than the audio kit provided in Mysuru Palace and Bengaluru Palace.

Iyer wants to include information about all historically important places in the app and will work on it once the project at Venkatappa Art Gallery is over. Most tourists visiting historical places hire guides to understand the rich stories associated with heritage buildings.
