The Amruthalli police solved a seven-month-old murder case by arresting five people onMonday.
Police arrested Manjunath, Purushottam, Rajanikanth, Muni Narayanappa, David Richard, for murdering Akbar (all residents of Amruthalli) on April 22, near Bagepalli in Chikkaballapur district.
'Love affair'
Akbar was Manjunath's neighbour and owned a goods vehicle. Akbar was in love with Manjunath's daughter. Both had also eloped and had returned after deciding to get married. However, Manjuath opposed the marriage, the police said.
Manjunath got her daughter engaged to another man. But she continued to meet Akbar, forcing Manjunath to plot Akbar's murder with his relatives Purushottam, Rajanikanth and Muni Narayanappa. They sought David Richard's help to execute their plan.
"Richard, according to the plan, hired Akbar's goods vehicle on the pretext of transporting goods from Chikkaballapur on April 22. Muni Narayanappa joined David on the way and the three other suspects followed the goods vehicle in a car.
The suspects asked Akbar to get down from the vehicle at a desolate place near Bagepalli and killed him by hitting his head repeatedly with an iron rod and burnt the body. They drove back to Bengaluru in Akbar's vehicle, abandoned the vehicle at Kogilu Cross, and went to their respective houses," the police explained.
"Bagepalli police registered a case after an unidentified body was traced the next day. Meanwhile, Akbar's mother lodged a missing complaint with the police, but did not specify the exact date. "It took some time for us to decide the exact date. We contacted police stations in neighbouring districts in an attempt to trace Akbar.
That is when Bagepalli police informed us about the unidentified body and the details matched," Srinivas Raju, a police inspector told DH.
'Vehicle missing'
He said local residents informed police about Akbar's affair with Manjunath's daughter.
"We detained him for questioning and he confessed to the crime. Based on his inputs, we arrested others. Akbar's vehicle is missing. We are trying to trace it," he added.
