A 28-year-old man killed his son and committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling in his sister's house in Tubarahallipalya in Whitefield, east Bengaluru, on Friday.
The deceased are Matharaju, a carpenter, and his son, Leela Manohar, 7. They are from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Matharaju had come to the city around two months ago along with his son and was living with his sister.
Police said that around 5.30 pm, when Matharaju's sister and her family members had gone out, he thrashed his son and hanged him from the ceiling fan. After a few minutes, he committed suicide by hanging from the same ceiling fan. The incident came to light when Matharaju's sister came home. She found the main door open and when she went in, she found the duo hanging.
She alerted her family as well as neighbours, who informed the Whitefield police.
The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and preliminary investigation revealed that Matharaju was suffering from depression. Nearly two years ago, he was deserted by his first wife over marital discord. Matharaju and his wife decided that their elder daughter will remain with her, while the younger son will live with him.
Nearly four months ago, Matharaju married another woman, but just a month after the wedding, she too deserted him, added the police.
Matharaju slipped into depression and stopped going to work. His family members asked him to stay with his sister in Bengaluru which would bring a change. But he was constantly talking about ending his life, mentioned the police.
A case has been registered at the Whitefield police station.
