Nearly 600 doctors under the aegis of Indian Medical Association staged a protest in the city against the proposed National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill which is supposed to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI).
The protest was part of a nationwide protest called for by the IMA. Protests were held at various district headquarters of the state as well. "The MCI is functioning well. Why have another body? The proposed National Medical Commission is not democratic. They will not understand the doctors problems," Dr Rajashekar Bellary, president, IMA, Bengaluru, said. He said the protesting doctors have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Health Minister K R Ramesh Kumar and Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala.
"One cannot convert a regulatory body into a nominated body. The proposed bill calls for the establishment of a nominated body in place of MCI and is unacceptable," the doctors said.
