Banks have set aside the rumours that Jan Dhan accounts are swelling with money as black money holders are dumping cash in the form of demonetised currency notes in their accounts.
The government has set a deadline of December 30 to accept the scrapped notes and there is a rush to get rid of currency notes, which became invalid overnight. In this background, there were rumours that the Jan Dhan accounts are flooded with demonetised notes.
The city is abuzz with stories like many families living below the poverty lines in the slums and EWS quarters have become rich overnight.
A branch manager of Central Bank clarified, "Jan Dhan accounts are closely guarded. They are not meant for such deposits."
Ramachandra, a senior Canara Bank official, said, "There is no limit to deposit cash. But everyone is afraid of making bulk deposits in the banks as they will be caught. So far, no bulk deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have come to our (Canara Banks) notice."
Another officer from Uco Bank said every bulk deposit, whether Jan Dhan account or not, is under watch. "We have not come across such bulk deposits," the officer said.
