The Ramanagaram police have arrested five persons in connection with the theft at Muthoottu Mini Financiers Pvt Ltd (MMFPL) at Mariyappanapalya in the city on October 20.
The arrested are identified as E Sureshchandra, 33 and Umesh, 31, both from Nagamangala taluk, Mahesh Pujari, 34, from Belthangady, K R Manjunath, 38, from Tumakuru and Prasanna Shetty, 35, from Udupi. The police have recovered ornaments, a pistol and a car, 15 live bullets, three bikes and 10 mobile phones, all valued at Rs 1.50 crore from the arrested.
According to the police, on the evening of October 20, a man who had disguised himself as police met the manager of MMFPL Mariyappanapalya branch, Nagendrappa, when he was about to leave for the day, after locking the office. He told Nagendrappa that the deputy superintendent of police (DySP) wanted to speak to him and directed him to board a car.
There were a few others in the car. After Nagendrappa got into the car, the suspects drove him to a desolate area and collected information about the branch and the office keys. The suspects held Nagendrappa in their custody and barged into the office the next day posing as cops. They threatened the employees at gunpoint, collected the keys of the strong room and directed the latter to get into a car. They abandoned the employees at Bayandalli, drove back to the MMFPL branch, collected ornaments and Rs 1.18 crore in cash and escaped.
