Kitsch Mandi, a flea market for emerging artists, designers and musicians, is back in the city at a bigger venue and with double the number of stalls. Sixty stalls, interactive art installations, food stalls, workshops for all age groups and a Deccan Herald coffee lounge are in store at the market on November 6 at Temple Tree, Sahakar Nagar.
The festival started as an experiment in 2011 by artist Laila Vaziralli to create space for upcoming artists where unlike most art galleries, they could interact with their audience. Since then, over 50 such flea markets have been organised in the city and in places like Mumbai, Goa, Pune and Delhi. The flea market has also been to several festivals such as Sunburn, Mad festival Ooty, and The Coalition in Delhi.
"We focus on innovation and design, giving a chance to young artists. The festival is intimate with magical decor and vibe," said Vaziralli, who curates the stalls. Do-It-Yourself plant sets, clothes with doodles, funky Kolhapuri chappals and other quirky fashion, home decor and handicrafts will be available.
Leather puppet-making, screenprinting, sketching and cane sculpture-making are some of the skills one can pick up at the workshops being organised at the event. Junta Art Market, an offshoot of Kitsch Mandi, will also be held at the flea market on Sunday with 15 emerging artists in the country showcasing their work.
Festival-goers will be in for a musical treat with performances by artistes like Prateek Kuhad, The Shubham Roy collective and Grape Guitar Box. The event will also have art installations like the one by illustrator, tattoo artist Gumani.
