Dasara Executive Committee has added another attraction this Dasara - narrating the significance and history of Dasara through 3D projection. The 10-minute video will be projected on the Town Hall building from Saturday, between 8.30 pm and 10.30 pm.

The 3D projection mapping, also known as video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a technology used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for video projection. The significance of Mysuru Dasara, including the history, tradition and foreigners' perspective about it will be showcased in the show. Studio Trika, Bengaluru, has developed the technology and has mapped the Town Hall to project the video, said Deputy Commissioner DRandeep, also Dasara Festival Special officer.

The deputy commissionersaid this is for the first time in Karnataka that 3D projection is being used. The theme of the mapping would showcase the state, its culture, heritage and rich history to tourists. The studio has created the India Gate 3D projection mapping for 'Campaign Clean India' and another one in Ahmedabad, the DC said.

Vineet of Studio Trika said the 3D mapping is like blending yesterday's past with the new technology. Explaining how it works, he said, the objects may be complex structures such as buildings. But by using specialised software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual programme which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. This technique is used by modern artists, who then add extra dimensions, optical illusions and notions of movement onto previously static objects. The final experience for the viewer, seeing these landmark buildings come alive, provides for a visual like no other.

3D mapped projection is a perfect blend of art and technology for Mysuru Dasara, which will have the added dimension of next generation technology. The content is based on the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka and explains the importance of several events of Mysuru Dasara. Visual artists from Poland, Italy and Spain have collaborated with Studio Trika to produce 3D effects for the viewers, he said.
