The Doddabommasandra lake in North Bengaluru is the latest example of how water bodies in the city have disappeared. The 124-acre water body is reduced to a mere two acres.
Also called the Kempegowda Sarovara in Doddabommasandra ward (number 10), it shows no signs of a wetland. There is no buffer zone on one side as apartment complexes share a common boundary with the lake. A part of the lake has been dried up by the BBMP to take up desilting works, while another segment has been filled with over 1,000 truckloads of mud.
Following complaints from local residents, the Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority (KLCDA) has written to the BBMP to rejuvenate the lake soon.
As the BBMP failed to act on its letter sent in September, KLCDA, on Monday, wrote a second one to the BBMP, seeking details of the engineers responsible to preserve the lake.
The KLCDA will take action against the erring officials as per the KLCDA Act, G Vidyasagar, its chief executive officer, told DH.
Doddabommasandra corporator Jayalakshmamma Pillappa said that with the consent of Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, development works had been undertaken.
Speaking on the corporator's behalf, her husband Pillappa said 80 acres of the lake land will be restored and the remaining 44 acres will be used to create a kalyani (for Ganesha idol immersion), a walking track and recreation facility for children.
Pillappa said that the depth of the lake was being increased, though the expanse of the water body was being reduced. But conservationists from IISc and KLCDA said shrinking the water spread area was a foolish idea. The lake has been converted into a swimming pool, which is not a good development, they said.
Pillappa held a meeting with KLCDA officials on Monday. He is learnt to have told the KLCDA that he was creating a new wetland there altogether. His claim of there being no encroachment of the wetland was rubbished by KLCDA officials.
