With increase in traffic after 11 pm in several parts of the city, the police plan to introduce a night shift for traffic police who currently work in two shifts — morning and afternoon.
R Hithendra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), told DH, "The current strength in the traffic police department is around 2,000, while the sanctioned strength is 3,400. There are 1,000 new recruits undergoing training and are expected to report for duty by December.''
The decision will be taken once the new recruits report to work. Extension of nightlife in Bengaluru up to 1 am has also contributed to an increase in night traffic.
"We need traffic police on the roads during night. The night shift traffic police personnel's job will include regulating traffic in addition to recording violations which is normally done only during the day,'' he said.
Currently, the police in the second shift work till early morning hours due to checks on drunk-driving at night. "Keeping these issues in mind, a night shift is being proposed," said a senior police officer.
The officer added that heavy traffic is being observed in the central business district areas (CBD) after 10 pm.
"Motorists jump traffic lights causing traffic jams at night. The presence of traffic police would deter people from breaking rules. Initially, those working on the third shift will be posted in CBD areas. After a couple of months, they will be posted across the city, especially in prominent localities like Electronics City, KRPuram, Whitefield, Kengeri and surrounding areas," he said.
A retired police officer, who did not want to be named, said, "The proposal has been there since 2000. Due to shortage of manpower, it was not implemented. Introducing this would help keep a check on rash and negligent driving and bring down accident rates."
