After the show of strength between two allies — the Congress and the JD(S) — over the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike mayoral election, the Congress late Tueday night finalised the candidature of Prakash Nagar corporator G Padmavathi for the top post.

Padmavathi will be the 50th mayor of Bengaluru if she gets elected on Wednesday. The JD(S) wants Congress corporator P Sowmya to be the next mayor. Earlier in the day, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy had said, "The chief minister is on a tour of flood-hit regions of north Karnataka. He will be back tonight (Tuesday night). He will decide who should be the next mayor." The Congress leaders vouched that the alliance with JD(S) would continue after the polls.

It is learnt that the JD(S) leadership was upset with the statements of some Congress ministers and MLAs that the selection of mayoral candidate was an intra-party matter and the JD(S) should not impose conditions. JD(S) spokesperson Ramesh Babu said his party had opposed Padmavathi's candidature as she faced several charges.

"Her caste certificate is suspect. Nobody knows if she is from Vokkaliga or Balija community. She was in our party earlier but betrayed us and joined the Congress. We have communicated to the Congress leaders that she is not reliable," said Babu.

Sources in the Congress said a senior minister had spoken to the JD(S) supremo and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and requested him to continue with the alliance and back Padmavathi.
