With just a day for the mayoral polls, the race for the top post has boiled down to two women corporators from the Congress. Prakash Nagar corporator G Padmavathi and Shanthinagar corporator P Sowmya are said to be the favourites, sources in the Congress said.

This time, the mayor's post is reserved for woman (Backward Class) while the deputy mayor is for male (general). Continuing their alliance, the Congress and the JD(S) have decided to share the mayor and deputy mayor's posts respectively. Terms and conditions for the alliance will almost be the same as that of last year's. The JD(S) is demanding five standing committee chairmen posts. The Congress is yet to take a final decision on this.

Padmavathi is backed by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and KPCC working president Dinesh Gundurao while Sowmya has the backing of Minister K J George and Shanthinagar MLA N A Harris. It is learnt that JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy is also backing Sowmya. "Kumaraswamy had some reservations about Padmavathi who was earlier with the JD(S). We will sort it out," said a top Congress functionary.
Sources added that Kumaraswamy is supporting Sowmya as she is a Vokkaliga and her parents hail from Ramanagaram district, the stronghold of JD(S).

M Anand from Radhakrishna Temple ward is likely to be a consensus candidate for the deputy mayor's post. He is presently the JD(S) leader in the BBMP Council. Earlier on Monday, Ramalinga Reddy said talks with the JD(S) regarding the mayoral election were successful and Congress will announce its candidate for the mayors post on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of launching new Karnataka Sarige buses in the city, Reddy said the posts in the standing committees will be given to independent candidates also. On the demand by the JD(S) for five standing committee chairmen posts, Reddy said a final decision will be taken soon. Kumaraswamy has advised the Congress to take his party leaders and corporators into confidence before taking important policy decisions in the BBMP.
