A 47-year-old woman was killed while her husband and two children were injured after their car rear-ended a highway patrol vehicle near Mathikere village in Channapatna on Mysuru Road in the early hours of Saturday.
Bhanumathi, a lab technician, died on her way to hospital, while her husband Murugan and their son Harandev and daughter Harini were injured. They are residents of Chennai and had come to the city to attend a function, They were on their way to Mysuru to visit a relative when the incident took place, said the police.
According to the police, around 6 am, Murugan, who was driving, failed to notice the slow-moving patrol vehicle, and rear-ended it. Due to the impact, the car toppled and Bhanumathi suffered serious injuries while the others escaped with minor injuries.
Passersby shifted them to a nearby hospital where Bhanumathi was declared brought dead while Murugan, Harandev and Harini were treated for minor injuries and are in a stable condition.
A senior police officer said, "Murugan, who was at the wheel, might have dozed off and failed to notice the patrol vehicle. He tried to steer the car to the left and hit the vehicle from behind. The car toppled and rolled over and was completely damaged. The two police personnel in the patrol vehicle were not injured." A case has been registered in Channapatna rural police station.
