A 37-year-old labour contractor died after a wall collapsed on him during the renovation work in a building belonging to Bhoruka Steels on ITPL Main Road in Mahadevapura on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Annamalai, a native of Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu. He had come to the city four years ago and was residing in Hoodi. He had taken up the labour contract work to renovate a three-storey building.
On Sunday morning, Annamalai had allotted the work to 15 labourers. He was working on the first floor to bring down a wall using a hammer.
As he was breaking down the wall, a portion collapsed on him. Annamalai was buried under the heap of debris. Hearing his screams, the other labourers went to his rescue. By the time they could pull him out, the remaining wall fell on him. The labourers managed to pull Annamalai out and shifted him to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead, said the police.
"The labourers were provided with safety equipment and Annamalai was also wearing a helmet. As soon as a part of the wall collapsed on him, he could not breathe as he was covered with the debris.
"When the entire wall fell on him, he sustained injuries on his abdomen and chest. It is an old building and was vacant for a long time. The building had become weak and they had decided to renovate it. His family members in Dharmapuri were informed and the body was shifted for post-mortem. The Mahadevapura police are inspecting the spot," added the officer.
