A few citizens from Gayathrinagar ward 'D' block, which falls under the Malleswaram Assembly constituency, have launched a plastic-free campaign to ensure successful implementation of the ban imposed by the state government.

The citizens decided to embark upon the initiative after observing that several traders in their locality continued to use plastic, despite the ban.

Santosh G, president of Sri Vidyaganapathi Yuvakara Sangha and a member of the Rajajinagar Residents' Welfare Association, said that the BBMP had launched a plastic seizing drive in a few pockets of the ward a few months ago. However, the drive did not serve any purpose, since the traders continued to use plastic.

He said: "When I asked the traders as to why they continued using plastic bags, they told me that they were easily available in the markets. While, a few others stated that the cotton bags were unaffordable, and the alternative options were expensive.

"I discussed with the members of Sri Vidyaganapathi Yuvakara Sangha and we purchased at least a 1,000 cotton bags and distributed them among the traders and households located in the block."

The team will be organising awareness campaigns and rallies for the next one week with a target to make Gayatrinagar, a plastic-free zone, in a phased manner, with support from MLA C N Ashwath Narayana and BBMP officials.

A plastic-free campaign was also officially launched on September 9, wherein residents and traders were advised to stop the use of plastics and switch to alternate options.

"After the awareness workshops and series of drives, and the distribution of bags, we are also planning to launch enforcement drives with support from the civic agency, to make our campaign successful," said another volunteer, Dhruthi Nagesh.
