Twenty-two-year-old Santosh D, a Tamil youth studying engineering in a private college in Banashankari and a resident of Sriramapuram, had posted certain remarks against Kannada actors on Facebook on Saturday.

The post, which has been deleted, mocked Kannada actors Shivarajkumar, Ragini Dwivedi, 'Duniya' Vijay and Darshan for their participation in protests over the Cauvery dispute.

Irked by the post, a group of five men traced Santosh and roughed him up. The video footage of Santosh being surrounded by men and being slapped went viral.

The video was picked up by Tamil channels who beamed it repeatedly on Sunday. But the channels, it is said, were silent on the FB post, which triggered the problem. In an apparent fallout, in the wee hours of Monday, a hotel run by a native of Karnataka was attacked in Chennai. Finally, the student tendered an apology, it is said.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in his letter to Tamil Nadu counterpart JJayalalithaa, makes a mention of the Santosh incident.

"The incident involving a youth by name Santosh in Bengaluru has been blown out of proportion by media channels in Tamil Nadu and is likely to incite passions and violence against Kannada-speaking people," he states in the letter.

The police have filed a case in the Santosh incident and are investigating.
