The Cubbon Park Walkers' Association intends to stage a protest against the Tourism Department's proposal to conduct some activities in Cubbon Park and Lalbagh from 7 pm to midnight, once or twice a month.

Association president
S Umesh said they will oppose the proposal if it is finalised. "Organising activities will lead to illegal activities in the park. The security system is insufficient and there are no CCTV cameras. The lights and sounds would disturb birds and reptiles in the park," he said.

Green spaces
"We have prevented a glasshouse from coming up here and we also got a ban on vehicles in the park on Sundays. These two parks are the last remaining green spaces in the city and we will fight to save them," Umesh said.

Environmentalist and chairman of Lalbaghs Advisory Committee Dr A N Yellappa Reddy has also spoken against the proposal.

"These two parks are the only places where nocturnal animals and birds come to rest. Not only the fauna, but also the flora will be affected by the harsh light used to illuminate the place," he said.

Responding to the opposition, Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge said, "People are jumping to conclusions about what we have proposed. We don't intend to have rock concerts in the park. We just want to see how we can engage people and curate some activities. We have not yet decided what they will be."

He said that the department is open to suggestions and discuss any concerns that citizens or environmentalists may have. "We will certainly keep the environment aspect in mind and we won't do anything to disturb the ecosystem of the parks," Kharge said.
