Pleased with the performance of the 74 Adarsha Vidyalayas in the SSLC examinations, the state government intends to further develop these schools by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS).

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Primary and Secondary Education minister Tanveer Sait said that teachers in these model schools would receive training from KVS. Adarsha Vidyalayas are secondary schools which were set up under the Centrally-sponsored Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan, in educationally backward blocks, with English as the medium of instruction.

"In this year's SSLC examination, the pass percentage in these model schools is 93.78. This year we have had a large number of applications for these schools. We are thinking of introducing NCERT textbooks from Class VI to VIII, as well. In future, we will adopt more schools and upgrade their standards," Sait said. He also said that with the help of KVS, they would extend the model schools upto Class XII.

Further, to reduce the dropouts from primary level to secondary and secondary level to higher secondary, the government will be setting up 176 'Shikshana Kavachas' at the hobli-level, where Class I to Class XII will be conducted on the same premises. Sait said that no government schools would be closed and wherever necessary, infrastructure such as labs, libraries and computers will be provided.

The government has launched an enrolment drive to ensure that no child remains out of school. Through television, print media, posters and door-to-door campaigns, the department will advertise free benefits such as food, textbooks, shoes, uniforms, cycles and others till May 31. After the school year begins, school authorities will make note of students who have not reported in the first seven days and ensure that they enrolled. On the demand among parents for English medium of instruction in government schools, Sait said there is a provision to do so for Class VI to VIII.

"We have not been able to implement this in all schools because of the lack of trained teachers. However, wherever there is a demand from the school development management committee, we have opened new sections alongside the existing ones with Kannada medium," he said. As many as 3,770 such sections have been permitted.
