Bengaluru lad joins Haas F1 team

Bengaluru teenager Arjun Maini took a big stride in his racing career when he was selected as a development driver by the Haas Formula One team on Thursday.

The 19-year-old, who has been part of Jenzer Motorsport in Formula 3, will be joined by Santino Ferrucci of the US in the team based in North Carolina.

As part of the deal, Arjun will get to explore the complete workings of a Formula One team and will interact with the likes of Haas' drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen as they journey around the F1 circuit.

Arjun will be the third Indian driver after Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok to be involved with a Formula One team. Karthikeyan and Chandhok have driven a Formula One car and Arjun hopes to follow in their footsteps.

"My ultimate dream was to enter Formula One and this is a big step in that direction, so I'm really delighted," said Arjun. "But at the same time, I want to stay grounded, keep the focus and learn as much as I can from this experience," he added.

Apart from being a part of the testing, Arjun will also get to travel with the team to all the races and will spend a substantial amount of time in the team's race simulator. "The opportunity to drive a Formula One car in the simulator is fantastic."

"I will be involved with engineers and other individuals connected with the sport. The knowledge gained will be invaluable and something I can utilise in my current racing."

Racing has been in Arjun's genes. His father Gautam Maini, a businessman, raced in the National Racing Championship during the 1990s.

His younger brother Kush has followed suit and is an established Formula 4 driver. After a highly successful few years behind the wheels of a go-kart, Arjun moved to racing open-wheeled cars in 2013 before making his Formula 3 debut in 2016 and is steadily climbing the ladder in the world of motorsport.
