A major pipeline work to be taken up by the Minor Irrigation Department some time soon, will lead to closure of nearly 40 roads, including high traffic density main roads in the city. Once the works begin, it will be a nightmare for several weeks or even months for road users on main roads like Whitefield Main Road, Old Airport Road and the Wind Tunnel Road.

The Minor Irrigation Department has submitted a proposal to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), for drawing a pipeline through some of the already choked areas and roads.

The Department is planning to carry treated sewage water from the Koramanagala-Challaghatta (KC) Valley Pump House to Narsapur tank in Kolar via Hoskote. The pipeline work pertains to the tank rejuvenation scheme, where it is intended to fill 126 tanks in Kolar and Chikkaballapur districts.

BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad told DH that while the pipeline will be drawn alongside the valley's nala in some places, in many places, the pipeline will have to be drawn through or alongside important roads.

He said the BBMP, which had given its permission for the pipeline, has now asked the survey and land records departments to do a detailed survey of the proposed alignment. "We need to ascertain which side of the road has to be dug up. In several places, the traffic density is high. The project will be taken up in coordination with the traffic department, which will identify alternative routes, and also ensure that commuters are put to little hardship," he added. He said that while some of the roads will have to be closed till the completion of works, others will be closed only at night.

The pipeline will be laid at a depth 1.2 metres, which requires digging up of roads. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner N S Megharikh said the project does pose major a challenge to the traffic department. "But we have given the required clearances. Once they (BBMP) give us a definite plan, then we will devise alternative routes. We have to face difficulties - it is inevitable," he added.
