A convict, who had escaped from the Central Prison at Parapanna Agrahara by hiding in a vegetable van on Tuesday, was nabbed near the Hebbal flyover in northern Bangaluru after a hot chase on Saturday morning.

Police received a tip-off that the prisoner, David Kumar (in pic), had taken shelter in a small passage near a garage close to the Hebbal flyover. A police team started patrolling and combing the area. Around 10.30 am, a man slipped into a small passage near the flyover. When police went to check, he took to his heels. Suspecting that he was Kumar, policemen went after him and caught him some distance away. They checked the photograph provided by the police control room and confirmed that he was indeed the fugitive prisoner.

He was taken to the Sanjaynagar police station. During the questioning, Kumar argued that he had to escape as prison authorities failed to release him even after he had completed his sentence. He said he got the idea of prisonbreak from films. Kumar was handed over to the Parappana Agrahara police who will investigate further and book him accordingly.

Kumar was sentenced to five years in prison and had served three years, a senior police officer said. "We suspect that he carefully plotted the escape and executed it at the right time."

Around 9 am on August 31, 2016, a van which supplies vegetables grown on the prison premises to the outside market arrived at the jail. Kumar, who was strolling around, found the van unguarded. He sneaked into its carrier compartment and hid himself amid the gunny bags of vegetables. The driver got down from the vehicle outside the main entrance to sign the register. Kumar used the opportunity to sneak out.

While in prison, Kumar was undergoing treatment for a psychological disorder and was allowed to wear plain clothes. He was lodged at the undertrial barrack tower - 2, and would keep to himself. His elder brother, Muniraju, is also in jail over house break-in charges.
