The number of graduates and post-graduates taking up the job of police constables is on the rise, Home Minister GParameshwara said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Parameshwara said while the basic qualification required to apply for the post of police constable was a pass in II PU, a majority of the applicants were graduates or post-graduates.
"Recently, of the 251 woman police constables who completed their training, 220 had completed their graduation," Parameshwara said. As much as 70% of the male applicants for the post of constable were graduates, he said.
The government will recruit 20,158 police constables by March next year, Parameshwara said. "It is for the first time that recruitment of such a magnitude is taking place," he said.
As many as 6,000 constables had completed their training and would be inducted into the police force soon. The process of conducting the written test and physical fitness test for an additional 6,610 constables had been completed, he said.
Recently, the Finance department had given its approval for recruiting another batch of 7,548 constables, Parameshwara said and added that the notification for the recruitment process would be issued soon.
In addition, 629 police sub-inspectors will be recruited for armed reserve, civil police, fingerprinting bureau, wireless, intelligence, Criminal Investigation Department and the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force, he said.
The sanctioned strength of the police force in the state is around one lakh, but the actual strength is just around 75,000. The overworked constables had threatened to go on mass leave on June 4.
They dropped their protest plans after the government assured them that their demands would be fulfilled.
