A small intestine transplant was performed in the city last week. This is said to be the first in the state, according to Zonal Co-Ordination Committee of Karnataka for Organ Transplantation.
The small intestine of a 30-year-old male donor who was declared brain dead following an accident, was transplanted to a 45-year-old male.
The patient developed severe abdominal pain in 2016 and sought medical advice. It was found that he had developed a clot in the superior mesenteric artery which supplies blood to the intestine. As a result, his intestine had become gangrenous. Doctors removed his entire small intestine to save his life.
Dr Mahesh S Gopasetty, consultant, multi-organ transplant surgery, Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road, said, "It is considered to be a very critical surgery as the exposure to infection is much higher."
"On March 1, our team of experts operated on him by transplanting the small bowel and tried to save his life," said Dr Gopasetty. The patient is at Apollo Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road under observation and is stable.
