Marriage turned sour for a young couple in Bengaluru. As in most cases, infidelity was the reason. This time, however, doubts over fidelity were triggered by the husband's excessive watching of porn.
The couple Nidhi and Nishanth (names changed), both ITprofessionals in their late 20s, had no marital discord until November 2016. Nidhi began suspecting that her husband could be having an extra marital affair.
With Nishanth giving less time to his wife, the relationship started turning sour. Nidhi caught him watching pornography on a few occasions leading to friction between them. Eventually, she understood that what had begun as a method for Nishanth to de-stress himself, had turned into an addiction.
The case of this couple from Bengaluru has been reported in the International Journal for Current Medical and Pharmaceutical Research. They had consulted experts at SHUT clinic (Service for Healthy Use of Technology) at Nimhans, for screening and management of husband's pornography addiction.
Speaking to DHabout the case, Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma, Additional Professor, SHUT clinic said that the couple approached them with concerns of reduced physical intimacy and, infidelity. "The husband was working for a company. He used to travel frequently on work. He would watch porn for about 15-30 minutes everyday," said Dr Sharma.
Nishanth was later psycho educated regarding the pattern of use and counselled by a team of experts to help him learn other relaxing methods to relieve the work-stress. Close to a month after follow ups, he achieved abstinence.
This is just one such case that experts at Nimhans have seen in the past. Dr Sharma said that last year, the Institute saw at least six cases where the wife suspected infidelity and, at the time of counselling it was found that the reason was porn addiction.
A door-to-door survey conducted by the Indian Council for Medical Research and Nimhans in 2013 had found that 0.2% of the 2,700 people aged between 18 and 45 years, who were surveyed, confessed to very frequently watching porn.
