Beyond Carlton will offer free counselling services to those affected by the fire-related tragedy.
Beyond Carlton is a registered charitable organisation that brings together survivors and families affected by the Carlton Towers fire that occurred on February 23, 2010.
Uday Vijayan, managing trustee and president, Beyond Carlton says the process of recognising and accepting the shock and facing extreme difficult situations is a slow and painful one. With a counsellor, it is possible to feel less alone, and more willing to look beyond the event.
"The only citizens' body that was born out of the fire tragedy is Beyond Carlton - our movement recognises the grief and trauma that victims and families need to overcome. Most often, we do not seek professional help to return to normal living. It is with this purpose that we believe that a free counseling service may help many to carry on their living with confidence and respect," he added.
Dr Anupama Sanjeev, a psychologist with over eight years of experience in counselling, has agreed to be part of the initiative taken up by Beyond Carlton. "Trauma faced by persons living with people affected by fire tragedies sometimes can be very deep-rooted. Negative emotions surface through panic attacks in some cases. Counselling can help, but it would take its own time. Bringing a person for counselling itself is a challenge for many," said Dr Anupama.
She said that to overcome the hurdle and to break the ice with people affected with the tragedy, there are plans to have group discussions at gatherings and to spread the word of 'help' for those who are grief-stricken. To seek counselling and for more details, log in to www.beyondcarlton.org. Those interested have to register on the website with details and Beyond Carlton would facilitate the counselling service.
