Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the government would consider regularising staff nurses working on contract basis at government hospitals while recruiting permanent staff nurses.
Siddaramaiah, who met a delegation of nurses who had come from various parts of the state, said these nurses would be considered based on their age and experience. He added that this could not be done immediately.
According to officials with the department of health and family welfare, close to 899 staff nurses have been serving the department on contractual basis for the past 10 years. Staff nurses, however, were unhappy even after the meeting, saying the government had made no assurances about regularising their jobs. They said that even as Siddaramaiah had assured them that their jobs would be regularised before the Congress government came to power, he has not kept his word, they said.
