The police have arrested four persons for murdering a man for gain. Suspects Alfat, Syed, Muheeb and Akbar, all residents of Channapatna in Ramangaram district had murdered Sabbar Ali (35), also a resident of Channapatna, on December 15. They had robbed Ali of Rs 10 lakh.

Ali was exchanging demonetised notes with new currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denomination for commission. The suspects decided to murder him as Ali had stocked new notes, said the police.

The suspects contacted Ali and claimed that they had demonetised notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denominations worth Rs 10 lakh. They promised to pay him commission for exchanging the notes. Ali accepted the offer, said the police.

As per the plan, Ali met the suspects with the money near a private factory on December 15. The suspects engaged Ali in a conversation. Soon, two of them caught Ali, while the two others strangulated him to death with a rope. They collected the Rs 10 lakh which Ali had brought along.

They dumped Ali's body in a sack and transported it to Tegginakallu forest area in a goods vehicle. They poured petrol on the sack and burnt the body, said the police.

Later, they went to Shimsha, offered prayers at a mosque and returned to Channapatna.

Alis parents lodged a missing complaint a day after the incident. The police traced the body in the forest area. Based on the call details of the victim's mobile phone, the police picked up the suspects and interrogated them. The suspects confessed to the crime and told the police that they had murdered Ali for money.
