Eight policemen, including a sub-inspector, who were arrested in the last fortnight over demonetisation-related crimes, have been dismissed from service.

"The competent authorities of Bengaluru City Police under Article 311(2)(b) of the Constitution dismissed eight police personnel for their involvement in dacoity of legal tender of Rs 100 and Rs 2,000 denominations, committed on the pretext of exchanging demonetised notes for a commission (sic)," police said in an official statement.

The dismissed personnel are N C Mallikarjun, a sub-inspector at Kalasipalyam police station, his constable colleagues — Manjunatha Moggad, L K Girish, Chandrashekar and Anantharaju — head constable Mayura, constable Raghava Nayak, both attached to the Girinagar police station, and B Shesha, a constable of the Central Crime Branch (CCB).

All the eight policemen were arrested in separate cases. Mallikarjun and four constables are accused of robbing a businessman of Rs 35.5 lakh in new notes near Peenya, north Bengaluru, on November 22. They were arrested on December 5 after Gangadhar, a mobile shop owner from Tumakuru district, lodged a complaint at the Peenya police station stating that he was robbed of Rs 35.5 lakh by a seven-member gang. Besides the five policemen, a police informant and his friend were also arrested in the case, a senior police officer said.

Head constable Mayura and constable Nayak were arrested on December 4 for helping a businessman make off with Rs 8 lakh in scrapped notes from a woman named Sukanya.
B Shesha, a constable attached to the Organised Crime Wing of the CCB, and three others were arrested on November 30 for abducting a businessman and his friend and robbing them of Rs 25.20 lakh in new notes.

The policemen's involvement in these crimes embarrassed the state government. At a review meeting of the Home department last week, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah instructed officials to act tough against the policemen, including terminating their services, to uphold the dignity and integrity of the force.

An officer of the rank of additional commissioner of police can terminate a sub-inspector while a deputy commissioner of police can dismiss constables and head constables, according to a senior officer.
