After years of dithering, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board has initiated the process to supply Cauvery water to 111 villages now in the city's fold. The civil work is expected to begin in April 2017.

Exactly a decade ago, in April 2007, the government expanded the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to cover seven city municipal councils, a town municipal council and 111 villages. The new civic body was given the name of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

"We have already invited bids for civil works. The contractor will be finalised by January end," a BWSSB official said.

The board hopes to complete the project in 24 months. The estimated cost is Rs 1,500 crore, of which the state government will provide Rs 600 crore.

"The remaining Rs 800 crore will be raised through Beneficiary Capital Contribution Charges," Kemparamaiah, engineer-in-chief of BWSSB told DH.

The term refers to money paid by people seeking new water connections.

Water saved by plugging leaks in the core areas of Bengaluru will be supplied to the new areas, he explained. BWSSB estimates loss during transmission and distribution at a high 45%.

Earlier, the BWSSB had drawn up a Rs 5,018-crore project to provide water and sewerage for Byatarayanapura, Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli, Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Dasarahalli.

The project was stalled when the Japan International Cooperation Agency for Financial Assistance refused to fund the project as the BWSSBhad failed to identify a source of water. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had directed the BWSSB and his finance department to explore other funding options.
