Brrr, it's cold and it's getting colder. It's time to pull on your woollens and a rain coat, too. Saturday night saw minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius — the lowest for December in the last nine years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Sunday evening, too, the minimum temperature was 12 degrees Celsius. The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall in south interior Karnataka in the coming days.

The minimum temperature is four degrees below the normal of 16 degrees Celsius. On December 10, the HAL airport recorded minimum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and the Kempegowda International Airport 10 degrees Celsius.

On December 25, 2007, Bengaluru had recorded minimum temperature of 11.8 degrees Celsius. The lowest-ever temperature recorded in the city in December was 8.9 degrees Celsius on December 29, 1883.

The day temperature, too, has been two degrees higher than normal. On Saturday, the city recorded maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, which was a degree above normal.

A senior IMD official explained that since winter has set in, the minimum temperatures are very important now. Presently, the sky is clear and the maximum temperatures are near normal, which is leading to a dip in temperatures during evening hours. But in the coming days, it is likely to get colder. It will also rain. The present weather is dry, which makes people feel colder.

The IMD has forecast thundershowers in the next two to three days because of the presence of the severe cyclonic storm, Vardah, over west-central and southern Bay of Bengal, around 440 km east of Chennai.

The cyclone is very likely to cross northern Tamil Nadu and the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, close to Chennai, as a cyclonic storm, the IMD official added.
