A 25-year-old man was charred, while his brother escaped with minor injuries after an LGP gas cylinder exploded at their Cubbonpet house on Friday night. The deceased was Subhakar Mehti alias Subho, 25. The victim's brother Subhankar Sawanth, 32, escaped with minor injuries in the explosion.

Subho and his siblings Sawanth and another (whose name is not known), goldsmiths from West Bengal, moved to Bengaluru two years ago. They took a house on rent at Cubbonpet. They received orders from jewellers, and manufactured ornaments at their house, said the police.

Subho and Sawanth were melting a bar, using the LPGgas cylinder, around 11.30 pm. The gas cylinder went off as Subho was charred to death while Sawanth rushed outside.

A constable from Halsuru Gate police station was on night patrolling. He saw thick smoke emanating from inside the house and Sawanth moving suspiciously outside the house. The constable detained Sawanth and questioned. Based on Sawanth's inputs, the police shifted Subho to Victoria Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The police said that cause for the explosion was yet to be ascertained. "Subho and Sawanth were working together when the explosion occurred. Subho was killed on the spot, while Sawanth escaped with minor injuries. The incident is highly suspicious. Hence, the police are interrogating Sawanth," said a police inspector.
