Worried about paying your maid's salary or milkman's charges on December 1 in cash? Instead of worrying, you may remind them to visit nearby camps organised by the State-Level Bankers' Committee - Karnataka Convenor from Saturday to open savings bank (SB) account for the unorganised sector.

The Centre has stressed the importance of opening bank accounts by persons belonging to the unorganised sector, who lack such accounts .

Welcoming the move, Canara Bank general manager (Circle Office) M M Chiniwar said, "Ultimately, the government wants cashless transactions. It is unable to fulfil the cash requirement by all the banks across India. This exercise will help in some extent to ease pressure."

"From Saturday, we are going to hold a camp for opening of SB accounts. We are coordinating with lead district managers, deputy commissioners, and district labour office to organise the camp. There will be a common platform wherein people who don't have an account can come with an Aadhaar card, KYC documents and open account instantly," Chiniwar added.

The unorganised sectors include daily-wage labourers, small manufacturing units, and domestic workers, among others. The deputy commissioners would decide on the venue for the camp. However, they may be organised at such places - grounds or kalyana mantapas - wherein a large number of people can access services. The camps will be held till November 30, 2016. He further said that daily wage labourers are paid through cash only. Once they have an SB account, they can request the contractor to credit the salaries in their respective accounts.

Chiniwar urged customers to visit bank branches to withdraw cash, provided they are needy. "Those who can manage with mobile wallets and debit/credit cards, may use them for regular requirement. Those who really require cash should visit branches for cash withdrawal. Once we start receiving Rs 500 notes in more numbers, pressure will be eased, and it will solve the problem."
