A 21-year-old habitual offender, who attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze while in police custody, succumbed to burns at St John's Hospital on Thursday.

According to the police, Chappar Ravi, a resident of Hosa Road, was detained and taken to the Bommanahalli police station in connection with a theft case. During questioning, Ravi said he wanted to relieve himself and went to the toilet. After a few minutes, the police noticed smoke from inside the toilet. They broke open the door and found Ravi had set himself on fire. He was shifted to St John's Hospital.

"In his statement, Ravi said his father had threatened to commit suicide if he indulged in any criminal activity. Ravi was upset about this and went into the toilet and attempted suicide. We are investigating how he got the match box and if he used any adhesive material to set himself on fire," added the senior police officer.

The officer added that the case will be investigated by the CID and a report will be submitted to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The police, who were present at the time of the incident, are being questioned. A departmental enquiry has been ordered and further action will be taken, the police said.
