Bengaluru Development Minister K J George said on Thursday that he had directed Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (Bescom) to disconnect power supply to all unauthorised outdoor advertisement hoardings in the city. This was being done to curb the advertisement mafia, he said.

Replying to a query by T A Saravana (JD-S) in the Council on Thursday, George said BBMP had identified 5,420 illegal hoardings across the city and notices had been served on the offenders to pay Rs 326 crore as advertisement cess and penalty. The minister, however, said that it was not feasible to prevent hoardings from being erected as the BBMP bylaw allowed display of advertisement hoardings against a prescribed fee.

George dismissed charges that IAS officer Rashmi Mahesh had been asked to go on leave for initiating action on illegal hoardings. He said that the officer had taken two months' leave to take care of her mother. The officer was free to report for duty whenever she wanted, the minister said. George appealed to all parties not to deface the city by putting up flex banners of their party leaders or by pasting posters on the walls of buildings.

The minister said that the legal heirs of the Bangalore Palace had agreed to opt for the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) to enable road widening works from Mehkri Circle-BDA Junction and Mehkri Circle-Cantonment.

Responding to a query by JD(S) member S M Aagha, George said that this had become possible after the Supreme Court allowed BBMP to acquire a piece of land of the Bangalore Palace through TDR, in its order dated November 11. The High Court has also directed the state government to take up widening works on Jayamahal Road to ease the traffic. Following this, BBMP has acquired the required land, he said. The BBMP has proposed to acquire 38,400 sq mt of land to widen Jayamahal Road, from Mehkri Circle to Cantonment Railway Station.Bengaluru Development Minister K J George said on Thursday that he had directed Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (Bescom) to disconnect power supply to all unauthorised outdoor advertisement hoardings in the city.
