The driver of a van carrying crisp new currency sped away with a whopping Rs 1.37 crore on Wednesday.

Dominic J, a resident of Lingarajpuram, pulled off the heist around 1.30 pm, police said. The incident occurred near the Bank of India branch on Kempe Gowda Road.

The driver had joined Secure Transit, a security agency, on November 1, and had been in the job for just three weeks.

On Wednesday, employees of Logicash Solutions, a cash management company, had visited the Kotak Mahindra Bank branch in New Tharagupet and the State Bank of India branch on JC Road.

They replenished cash in some ATMs and stopped at the Bank of India branch.

Logicash employees K M Shivakumar and Saleem got down from the vehicle and went inside to ask the manager if he was handing over any cash to them.

According to the complaint, gunman Chaman Lal left the gun inside the van and went out to relieve himself. Dominic seized the opportunity and drove away with the cash, police suspect. The gunman said he had noticed the vehicle speeding and alerted Shivakumar and Saleem.

Logicash employees tried calling Dominic on his mobile, but it was switched off. They then informed their bosses. "Preliminary investigation suggests it was all planned. We suspect many more are involved," said a senior police officer.

Police went to Dominic's house in Lingarajapuram on Wednesday, and did not find anyone there. His wife, who works in Dubai, had visited the city three days ago, police said.

The haul is Rs 1.37 crore, in 1,000 notes of Rs 100 and 6,800 notes of Rs 2,000.
