Facing space constraints in and around Bengaluru, Gail Gas Ltd is exploring opening Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refill stations at petrol pumps owned by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).

Gail Gas Ltd, which supplies piped gas in Bengaluru, has been looking for suitable land in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts for over a year now. It invited expression of interest (EoI) from landowners to lease their property, but did not get any response. The EoI was invited three times in a span of one year.

The company, which is a subsidiary of Gas Authority of India, has drawn up a plan to set up 62 CNG stations across Bengaluru in the first phase for supplying CNG for commercial use, including vehicles. It recently commissioned a CNG station at Premnagar near Laggere, off Magadi Road. Three more stations are coming up at Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus depots near Peenya, Hennur and Sumanahalli.

"We are looking for suitable land. Most of the landowners are interested in selling their property rather than leasing them. The company cannot buy the land as the prices are very high. So, we are talking to the IOC on setting up CNG stations at its petrol bunks," GAIL Gas Ltd managing director Partha Jana said.

Gail Gas Ltd has been looking for plots of land measuring between 600 square metres and 2,400 square metres in localities that fall within 2-3 kilometres of the Outer Ring Road near Beggars' Colony, Hebbal and Singasandra; along Tumakuru Road (between Yeshwantpur and Dobbspet); between Whitefield and Hoskote; near the Bommasandra-Jigani link road; between Bellandur and Sarjapur; Hennur main road, and between Bommasandra and Attibele on Hosur Road. It is also looking for land in various locations in Bengaluru Rural district.

Jana said the company was in the process of selecting petrol pumps in Bengaluru that were suitable for setting up CNG stations. Thereafter, it will enter into an agreement with IOC on setting up and running the CNG refill stations.

Besides, Gail Gas has requested Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board to allot land, he added.
