A major road infrastructure overhaul in the city is in the offing as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is all set to take up 200 public works worth Rs 383.65 crore, most of which pertain to roads and improvement of drains.

Of the 70-odd packages to be taken up this year, the Palikes Project division will float tenders for 27 packages comprising 200 works shortly. "We have started the process of inviting tenders and between December 15 and 25, all necessary approvals will be given.

The work orders will be issued between December 28 and 31," said a senior Palike engineer.

The civic agency started the process of launching public works on a large scale after Mayor G Padmavathi said that even six months into the new financial year, none of the works in the budget had started.

She held several meetings at various zonal headquarters of the Palike asking officers to start the process.

Most of the works will be taken up in East, South, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Yelahanka, and Dasarahalli zones and pertain to asphalting of roads and improvement of drains.

A substantial amount of money is meant for upgrading arterial and sub-arterial roads in Yelahanka and Byatarayanapura Assembly constituencies under the Nagarotthana scheme, funded by the state government.

These works are seen as a run-up to the 2018 Assembly elections, aimed at giving fillip to road infrastructure ahead of the elections.

"The rest of the projects will be taken up shortly. We will initiate the process of inviting tenders," said M R Venkatesh, engineer-in-chief, BBMP.
