A traffic policeman played Good Samaritan by taking the driver of a van to hospital after he collapsed at the wheel. The incident took place near the Old High Grounds Circle, central Bengaluru, around 7.30 am on Wednesday.

Kumar C, a head constable attached to the High Grounds Traffic police station, was posted at the intersection when a woman and eight schoolchildren called for help.

"I rushed to the van and found that the driver, Prakash, 55, had collapsed from chest pain. I asked the woman to dismount along with the children. I moved Prakash to the back seat and drove the van to Mallige Hospital. I told the doctors that he had collapsed at the wheel.

They admitted him and resuscitated him. They said he had suffered a mild cardiac arrest and was brought on time. A delay of even a few minutes would have been fatal," Kumar told DH.
Kumar said that he then got the phone number of Prakash's daughter and contacted her. "I called the family and narrated the incident and asked them not to worry," he said and added that he also kept his seniors in the loop.

Commenting on the incident, a senior police officer said a major accident had been averted. "Prakash quickly pulled in as chest pain hit him. Had he continued to drive, there would have been an accident and children injured. Kumar's timely intervention helped save a life."
