The BBMP's drive to remove encroachment of stormwater drains (SWD) has lost steam with the civic agency focusing only on recovering vacant sites on the outskirts of the city.

The demolition drive to remove encroachment of SWDs had started following flash floods in certain parts of the city on July 28, due to rains. Many houses were razed in Dodda Bommasandra, Avani Sringeri Nagar and Shubh Enclave at Kasavanahalli. Having come under attack for bulldozing houses of the poor and the middle class and not touching the buildings of the high and mighty, the BBMP stopped the demolition drive.

On Monday, the drive was supposed to start afresh, but could not take off. BBMP chief engineer (stormwater drains) Siddegowda said the drive had slowed down for a while, but it would resume on Tuesday.

"Actually we wanted to start it from today (Monday), but due to a series of meetings and inspections, the drive (to remove SWD encroachments) could not take off. We started it at Govindapura in Yelahanka zone on a small scale and will take it up in full swing," said Siddegowda. The drive will be aimed at recovering SWDs filled with mud and soil and converted into residential plots.

"Also, besides recovering vacant sites, we will demolish the compound walls built around them. There are no buildings to demolish as of now. If the situation warrants, we will demolish the buildings too. Our drive is mainly on the outskirts of the city," said Siddegowda.
