The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)will start collecting the betterment charges shortly, thus paving way for owners of thousands of properties in Bengaluru to get 'A' khata.
Speaking to DH, the newly-elected chairperson of the standing committee on taxation and finance, M K Gunashekar, said a case was filed in the high court in 2014 over the rates fixed for collecting betterment charges. The court had granted stay on the BBMP collecting betterment charges.
"Now the stay has been vacated and the Palike is free to collect betterment fees from property owners who have converted land from agriculture to residential purposes. Owners of the properties, which are still on agriculture land cannot pay betterment charges," said Gunashekar. He said there are about 4,800 properties, including big layouts, which will be benefited.
"We are expecting a revenue of about Rs 200 crore to Rs 250 crore from these layouts," he added. Gunashekar said the BBMP has got a go-ahead from the high court to collect advertisement taxes from 40 advertisers who had moved court against the Palikes move to remove their hoardings over the non-payment of dues. "The court has directed us to collect only the tax and not penalty or interest. We are going to generate about Rs 100 crore from this," he said.
