The Bagmane Tech Park has offered to part with one acre and nine guntas of its land adjacent to Byrasandra lake in eastern Bengaluru to compensate for the 39 guntas of the lake's land it has encroached upon.
On Thursday, Legislative Assembly Speaker K B Koliwad, who is also the chairperson of the House committee on lake encroachments in Bengaluru, visited some of the large establishments that have encroached on lakes and storm water drains in eastern and northern parts of the city. The committee's other members, including Rajajinagar MLA S Suresh Kumar, were part of the visit.
When the members reached Byrasandra lake, Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner V Shankar told them that the extent of the lake in revenue records was 12 acres and nine guntas. The water body is now reduced to just about seven acres, with at least two-and-a-half-acres being encroached upon, he said.
Shankar told the members that Bagmane Tech Park has encroached on 36 guntas of Byrasandra lake, while 37 guntas have been used to build a road. Another IT company
has encroached on around 13 guntas. "We have recovered a good portion of the lake land from Bagmane Tech Park but we could not recover nine guntas on which a large building of a multinational company has come up. We are in the process of recovering it," Shankar told Koliwad.
At this juncture, K C Ravi Kumar, senior general manager of Bagmane Tech Park, intervened and offered to part with one acre and nine guntas of the company's land adjacent to the lake and requested that the building be spared from any action. Koliwad said he would take up the matter at the next meeting of the committee.
The next stop of Koliwad's caravan was VR Mall on ITPL main road in Mahadevapura. The property is built on an acre of the Devasandra lakebed. Koliwad directed Shankar to order the mall's removal.
Speaking to reporters later, Koliwad said he also visited Karle Tech Park near Manyata Tech Park, that had encroached on a stormwater drain. Dasarahalli lake, too, has some extent of encroachment.
"These are serious kinds of encroachment and need to be addressed," he said.
Relief for Bagmane?
Sources in the government indicate that efforts are on to regularise the encroachment of lake by Bagmane Tech Park. "The government has extraordinary powers which it can exercise to regularise the encroachment in exchange for one acre and nine guntas, as offered by Bagmane Tech Park. In normal circumstances, such a deal cannot happen," an official said.
