A record ridership of 1.97 lakh in Namma Metro on a single day has had a telling effect on the sale of Contactless Smart Card (CSC). The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has already initiated the process to procure another four lakh travel cards to be issued to the commuters.

After the completion of the entire Phase I - Namma Metro network, the BMRCL is expecting the daily ridership to touch five lakh. U A Vasanth Rao, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO), BMRCL, said the Corporation has already issued 4.5 lakh smart cards to the commuters and about 50,000 smart cards are available at the different metro stations for sale.

BMRCL, which charges Rs 50 for each card, excluding travel value, generates more than Rs 1.4 crore through sponsorship. "While one face of the travel card will have BMRCL's branding, the other side is available for sponsorship. Apart from the logos of contractors of BMRCL projects, the Corporation has ample space to display those of corporate companies,'' Rao added.

He informed that the brand logo, measuring 8 mm x 20 mm, would be printed on the cards and added that the charge for the same would be Rs 5 lakh. He said that last time, the smart card had 32 logos, which generated a total revenue of Rs 1.46 crore.

Rao informed that the BMRCL had plans to issue licences to manage paid parking lots at four stations on Reach 3 and 4 of the Namma Metro stations. He identified the stations as: Peenya industry station (3,661 square metres), Srirampura station (804 square metres), Sampige Road station (880 square metres) and Banashankari station (574 square metres).

He elaborated that the parking lot would be issued under a two-year term of licence agreement and added that the Board was expecting a licence fee of more than Rs 18 lakh. While the Peenya station has a space to park 380 two-wheelers, 83 four-wheelers and 8 Light Motor Vehicles, the Sampige station and the Banashankari station have space only for 235 and 180 two-wheelers, respectively. The Srirampura station has space for 173 two-wheelers and seven four-wheelers, he added.
